After their narrow escape from Los Angeles with a 16-10 win over the Rams, the Seattle Seahawks are in the driver's seat in the NFC West.

Both of those teams sit atop the division with 3-2 records, but according to ESPN's NFL Football Power Index -- a predictive system that is explained in detail here -- the Seahawks are the overwhelming favorites to win the NFC West. FPI gives that an 83.9 percent chance of happening, up from 69 percent last week.

The Rams are at 10.4 percent, while the Arizona Cardinals (2-3) are at 5.7 percent. Per FPI, the San Francisco 49ers (0-5) have virtually no chance at 0.1 percent.

More from FPI:

  • Only the 5-0 Kansas City Chiefs (92.5 percent) have a greater chance of winning their division than the Seahawks.
  • The Seahawks have an 85.9 percent chance to make the playoffs and a 7.5 percent chance of winning the Super Bowl.
  • Seattle is projected to finish 10-6, ahead of the Rams at 8-8, the Cardinals at 7-9 and the 49ers at 3-13.
  • The Seahawks have the fourth-best FPI rating at 4.8, behind the Chiefs (8.3), New England Patriots (6.7) and Green Bay Packers (5.2).

Seattle's remaining schedule doesn't stand out as overwhelmingly easy, but it does begin with two favorable matchups against opponents who are reeling with injuries to star players.

After their bye, the Seahawks will head east to play the 0-5 New York Giants (20th in FPI), who just lost starting receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall. The Houston Texans (18th in FPI) will be without defensive end J.J. Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus when they come to Seattle the following week.

That should give the Seahawks a good chance to be 5-2 when they host the 2-2 Washington Redskins (13th in FPI) in Week 9.

The 10 opponents remaining on the Seahawks' schedule -- they still play Arizona twice -- have a combined record of 21-27. Three of them have a top-10 FPI rating. The Atlanta Falcons (Week 11) are fifth, the Philadelphia Eagles (Week 13) are sixth and the Dallas Cowboys (Week 16) are 10th.
